NFL reporter Dianna Russini has stepped down from The Athletic after a whirlwind of controversy. Just days earlier, photos of her with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at a resort in Arizona sparked an internal investigation.
The New York Post published the photos, claiming they were taken right before the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix at the end of March. In a letter to The Athletic’s Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg, Russini expressed her dismay over the media speculation surrounding these images. She stated, “I have always covered the NFL with professionalism. The support from The Athletic has been great, but the following frenzy just isn’t based on facts.”
Russini made it clear that she didn’t want the issue to overshadow her work. “I refuse to let this define my career,” she said. As a result, she chose to resign before the end of her contract.
Before joining The Athletic in 2023, Russini spent nearly ten years at ESPN. She was an anchor on SportsCenter and served as an NFL analyst. Now, she is walking away from a platform where she has hosted a podcast and made video appearances.
Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married to other people, downplayed the photos. They stated that the images were taken during a larger gathering and were misconstrued. Vrabel commented, “Those photos show a completely innocent interaction.”
Interestingly, this controversy comes as Vrabel gears up for his second season as head coach, following a notable year where he led the team to a 14-3 record, even earning accolades as the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
