Dick Vitale, the beloved college basketball commentator, was ready to make his comeback after a tough fight against cancer. But now he has to pause again.

Recently, ESPN shared a statement from Vitale about an accident he had at his home in Florida. This accident has led to new health challenges, making it difficult for him to return as planned. At 85 years old, he was set to call a game between Duke and Wake Forest next Saturday.

In his statement, Vitale expressed his disappointment:

“I’m sorry to share that I won’t be able to call the Duke-Wake Forest game next weekend. The accident at my home has created some new health challenges for me. I’m devastated that I won’t be with my ESPN buddy Dave O’Brien and all the players and fans. I was really looking forward to experiencing the excitement of college basketball again after nearly two years.”

Vitale also mentioned that he hopes to recover fully and will keep everyone updated. “Despite this setback, I’m grateful for the support from family, friends, and my ESPN teammates,” he said. He remains determined to return to the sport he loves.

It’s been almost two years since Vitale last commentated on a game, which was during the 2023 national championship between UConn and San Diego State. His health struggles began in 2021 when he was diagnosed with melanoma, followed by lymphoma. He has faced numerous challenges since then, even undergoing vocal cord surgery and battling cancer that affected multiple parts of his body. Earlier this month, he proudly announced himself as cancer-free.

For now, ESPN hasn’t shared when he might return, but fans are hoping to see him back in action soon. Dick Vitale’s passion for basketball and his resilience in the face of adversity continue to inspire many.
