A Bright Moment in the Utah Sky
Early Thursday morning, Utah’s sky became briefly as bright as day. A suspected meteor lit up the atmosphere, creating what experts call a fireball.
Reports came in around 4:50 a.m. with many witnessing the dazzling display across Utah and nearby states. Although the American Meteor Society has received numerous reports, they have not yet confirmed the event as a meteor.
Herb Patterson, who was driving in Spanish Fork, was particularly taken by the sight. “It was amazing,” he said. The light started dim, then grew brighter. “The sky and everything around me lit up for a fraction of a second. And then it was gone.”
Videos captured in Tooele County confirmed the bright flash seen by many that morning. However, it remains unclear if any fragments made it to the ground.
Jason Trump, an Education Program Manager at Clark Planetarium, explains that finding pieces depends on where they land. “If it fell in rocky canyons, it’s going to be hard to find. But if it fell on open land, like the Salt Flats, recovery might be possible,” he said.
Interestingly, this fireball appeared during what NASA calls “fireball season,” running from February to April. During this time, sightings typically increase. Utah is also experiencing two meteor showers: the Lyrid and the Eta Aquarids, but experts believe this fireball came from the asteroid belt, not a comet.
This event aligns with the recent return of astronauts from NASA’s Artemis II mission, who reentered the atmosphere experiencing similar heat. Trump noted this connection, saying that studying meteors helps scientists improve safety for astronauts.
For those hoping to see more celestial events, Trump suggests getting away from city lights and watching the southern skies. He invites anyone interested to visit Clark Planetarium to view real meteorites.
Patterson described the experience as unforgettable. “I’ve always wanted to see a meteor, and this was one of the coolest things I’ve seen,” he shared.
In a world filled with wonders, moments like this remind us of the beauty and excitement just above us.
