Did Astronomers Just Capture the Stunning Moment a Black Hole Was Born?

A bright star in the Andromeda Galaxy has mysteriously vanished. Astronomers suggest it may have collapsed into a black hole.

Kishalay De, an astronomer from Columbia University, explains, “It used to be one of the brightest stars here, but now it can’t be seen even with the best telescopes.” This disappearance was highlighted in the journal Science, where De and his team analyzed data from NASA’s NEOWISE spacecraft collected over 15 years. They aimed to track how stars change in brightness over time.

They noticed something unusual. In 2015, this star suddenly brightened for a year and then started to fade away. By 2018, it was completely gone from sight in optical light. This trend hints at the star exhausting its nuclear fuel and collapsing into a black hole. The faint glow remaining is likely from the star’s remnants spiraling into the black hole.

De notes, “We can expect it to continue to fade into darkness, which could take decades.” Generally, massive stars explode into supernovas—a much louder and brighter event. For instance, supernovas can outshine entire galaxies. However, the quiet collapse into a black hole is harder to spot.

Suvi Gezari, an astronomer from the University of Maryland, emphasizes the importance of long-term infrared observations for understanding these hidden processes. She mentions that typical events like this one can be obscured by dust.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time astronomers have observed a disappearing star. There’s only one other similar case known, and it didn’t provide as much data. Christopher Kochanek from Ohio State University points out that understanding these disappearing stars opens a new chapter in black hole research.

Some experts are skeptical. Kochanek suggests that these stars might not actually be vanishing. Instead, they could be merging with other stars while their light gets obscured by dust. Further observations from telescopes in the coming years will hopefully clarify this mystery.

In the fascinating realm of space, the ongoing research into these vanished stars and potential black holes could reshape our understanding of stellar evolution. Only time will tell if these theories hold true or if new discoveries will emerge. For more information, you can explore NASA’s findings on star formation and black holes.
