Did the 49ers Make a Bold Move by Drafting De’Zhaun Stribling? Insights from an NFL GM

The San Francisco 49ers made a bold choice by selecting De’Zhaun Stribling, a wide receiver from Mississippi, as the 33rd overall pick in the draft. Many fans were surprised by this pick, sparking debates about whether it was a wise move. However, insights from an NFL general manager suggest that Stribling is a standout player, noting his impressive mix of size and speed, and his strong character. “Awesome kid. Smart, tough—what you want,” the GM said.

While some believe the 49ers could have traded back for him, others argue that Stribling would have been gone by their next opportunity to draft. The general consensus is that if Stribling was their guy, then taking him at 33 was not unreasonable.

General manager John Lynch highlighted the growing interest in Stribling as the draft approached. Interestingly, late risers in the scouting community are rare due to the extensive research teams conduct ahead of the draft. Yet, Stribling was certainly a name that gained momentum.

Stribling’s pre-draft visits caught attention; he had eight teams actively seeking him, showcasing his rising stock. NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah had noted just days before the draft that Stribling had shifted from being a third-round prospect to potentially being drafted much earlier.

His college performance showed mixed results. In 2025, Stribling recorded 55 catches for 811 yards and six touchdowns, slightly outshined by his teammate. Despite ranking 116th among FBS players in receiving yards per game, the 49ers saw potential in his late-season surge. In his final ten games, he made 44 catches, tallying 665 yards and five touchdowns. This strong finish included impressive performances against top teams like Georgia.

Scouts from the 49ers were impressed by his physical abilities and noted his run-blocking skills, distinguishing him as one of the best run-blocking wide receivers in the draft. His work ethic and leadership qualities were significant factors; he was recognized as a “gold-helmet” player for these traits.

At 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Stribling wowed at the combine with a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, ranking among the fastest for his size. This performance helped dispel some doubts about his route-running abilities, especially after showing off a more varied skill set during his pro day.

Overall, while opinions vary on whether the 49ers overreached, there’s a consensus that Stribling has the tools to succeed and contribute to the team’s future. His blend of talent and character might just prove the doubters wrong.
