DILG Investigates BFP Officials for Extravagant Lifestyles: What You Need to Know

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla is looking closely at some Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) officials in Tagaytay City. These officials are under investigation for living lavishly and owning expensive resorts that don’t seem to match their government salaries.

Remulla, during an interview, highlighted that these officials earn about ₱120,000 a month yet appear to own resorts worth millions. “I find it hard to believe they could save up for a ₱100 million resort just from their salaries. It’s like winning the lottery,” he remarked.

The inquiry doesn’t stop at luxury resorts. Remulla also raised concerns about a corruption scheme involving the illegal sale of fire extinguishers. He received reports from the Italian ambassador about a BFP inspector who pressured the embassy into buying specific brands of fire extinguishers.

To combat corruption, Remulla announced that starting next year, BFP inspectors will wear body cameras. The DILG plans to purchase around 5,000 cameras to ensure that all inspections are recorded.

This initiative is expected to promote transparency and accountability within the agency. In a recent survey by Transparency International, 54% of respondents expressed a lack of trust in public officials, highlighting the need for reforms like these. Body cameras could help rebuild that trust and deter corrupt practices.
