Discord Boosts User Engagement: Introducing Mobile Video Ads in June!

Discord is making waves by introducing video ads to its mobile app this June. The company refers to these ads as “Video Quests,” allowing advertisers to present trailers, announcements, and premium content right on users’ screens.

Historically, Discord was free of ads until March 2024. That’s when it launched ads on its desktop and console platforms, rewarding users with incentives for engaging with specific games or streams. Now, with the addition of Video Quests, users will see video ad prompts at the bottom-left corner of their mobile screens, giving them the choice to expand or ignore them.

Discord emphasizes user control. People can opt out of personalized promotions and can even hide certain ads if they find them irrelevant. This approach aims to maintain a user-friendly experience while also bringing in revenue through advertising.

Peter Sellis, Discord’s product SVP, said, “Expanding our advertising platform to mobile is an obvious, natural evolution in our strategy.” This clearly illustrates Discord’s intention to integrate ads seamlessly while prioritizing user engagement.

Interestingly, a recent survey showed that over 70% of mobile users are open to interactive ads, especially if they come with rewards. This data suggests Discord’s strategy might resonate well with its audience. Users are often looking for engaging content, and Video Quests could offer that in a new, exciting way.

As tech companies keep adapting their business models, Discord’s move could serve as a model for others aiming to balance revenue generation with user satisfaction. The platform’s decision to embrace ads, particularly video formats, is a strategic step in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.
