When the Larimer County Farmers’ Market kicks off this weekend, it will celebrate a remarkable milestone: 50 years of connecting locals and visitors with fresh produce and local crafts. Located in Fort Collins, this market is the oldest in Northern Colorado, taking place annually from late spring through early fall at the Larimer County Courthouse parking lot.
Maggie Switzer, the farmers market coordinator, has witnessed families grow alongside the market. She oversees operations with the help of volunteers and vendors, highlighting its importance to the community. “Fort Collins is an agricultural hub in Colorado,” she explains. “With CSU in town, there’s a strong focus on sustainable food systems.”
The market began in 1976 at the CSU Trials Garden, initiated by Colorado Master Gardeners who wanted to share their excess produce. Over the years, it has moved and expanded, now running from May to October and hosting a thriving roster of vendors.
“Community really shines here,” Switzer shares. The market now features 130 vendors, with 91% sourced from Larimer and Weld counties. Occasionally, vendors from Denver and the Western Slope join in, bringing a diverse selection of fruits and goods.
Visitors can expect a delightful range of products, including local meats, baked treats, and food trucks serving delicious meals. “Come hungry!” Switzer advises. “There’s everything from quiche to pancakes.”
Recent trends show an increasing number of consumers looking to support local businesses. According to a recent survey, 76% of people prefer shopping at farmers’ markets for fresh produce and local goods, reflecting their growing importance in the economy. These markets foster community ties while promoting healthier eating.
