Discover a Healthier, Active Lifestyle with Conrad: Trek Through Shillong’s Rhododendrons, Bunkers, and Rich History!

Shillong, April 7: Who doesn’t love a holiday? The idea of a day off feels refreshing. Picture slow mornings, no alarms, and that cozy vibe of simply being. With a warm coffee in hand, you can enjoy the sun filtering through trees or the sound of rain. It’s a chance to escape the daily grind.

For many in Shillong, holidays mean gathering with friends, brunches, or road trips to nearby Sohra for its stunning waterfalls. Some might head to Dawki for a peaceful boat ride on the Umngot River. However, often these getaways can feel like they require venturing far from home, sometimes even to places with spotty cell service.

But what if the adventure you seek is right in your own backyard?

Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, is promoting this idea—one trek at a time. Over the past few years, he has become a strong advocate for a more active lifestyle. From walking to work to launching the ‘Fit India Movement’ in 2019, Sangma emphasizes health and fitness. In March 2024, he introduced the ‘Meghalaya Trails App and Trekking Book’ to encourage locals and tourists alike to explore the great outdoors.

Recently, he took to the trails again during a public holiday for Shad Suk Mynsiem, embarking on the Rhododendron Riot Trek in Upper Shillong. Just a short drive from the city center, this 2.5-hour trek offers stunning views and a refreshing break from city life.

“This trek has historical significance; it was a route used by the British during their rule,” Sangma shared as he caught his breath on the trail. “You can see the bunkers left from World War II and other historical structures.” This makes the trek not just a physical journey but also a step back in time.

The trek winds through the Shillong Peak–Upper Shillong Forest Reserve, part of the Shillong Rhododendron State Park. This area bursts with vibrant colors each spring as the rhododendrons bloom, creating a stunning canvas of pinks, reds, and purples. It’s also an important ecological zone, crucial for maintaining the area’s water supply and air quality.

Sangma encourages both locals and visitors to experience this hidden gem. “You’ll really enjoy it,” he said, emphasizing how close this natural escape is to the city.

As people increasingly look for ways to connect with nature and improve their well-being, local initiatives like this trekking campaign are crucial. According to a recent study by the World Health Organization, physical activity can prevent many diseases and improve mental health. With more people recognizing the importance of outdoor activities, treks like the Rhododendron Riot are not just leisurely; they provide significant health benefits.

So, next time you feel the itch for an adventure, consider heading to the Rhododendron Riot Trek in Upper Shillong. It’s a beautiful way to escape city chaos while soaking in fresh air and natural beauty. Explore the paths less traveled and reconnect with the stunning environment right at your doorstep.
