Discover a Remarkable New Abelisaurid Dinosaur Species Unearthed in Argentina!

A team of paleontologists from Argentina, Brazil, and the UK has unveiled a new dinosaur: Vitosaura colozacani. This fascinating species lived around 80 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.

Vitosaura colozacani belongs to the Abelisauridae family, known for their predatory nature and strong presence in Gondwana. Currently, over 25 abelisaurid species are recognized, primarily from Argentina’s Patagonia region. Dr. Harold Jiménez Velandia, a key member of the research team, noted that abelisaurids can be identified by their unique skull structure and small forelimbs.

The discovery of numerous abelisaurid specimens has deepened our understanding of these dinosaurs. Historically, they thrived across different regions, including northern Africa and what is now Europe. The fossil record indicates these dinosaurs were particularly successful in South America, with Vitosaura colozacani being a significant addition to this rich history.

The fossil remains of Vitosaura colozacani were discovered during field trips in 2009 and 2010 in La Rioja Province, Argentina. Notable finds included vertebrae and limb bones. This medium-sized dinosaur measured around 4.5 to 5.5 meters (15 to 18 feet) in length.

The environment in which it existed was seasonal and semi-arid, with yearly rainfall varying between 230 and 450 mm. The researchers believe this new find extends the geographical range of abelisaurids, though the incomplete state of the fossils limits what we can learn from them.

Dr. Jiménez Velandia emphasized the need for further studies to enhance the understanding of Abelisauridae’s family tree. This research is crucial to clarify the relationships within this dinosaur group and explore new fossil material to support these insights.
