Indian Railways is set to launch the Amrit Bharat Express 3.0, a new generation of trains that aims to make rail travel more affordable and comfortable for everyone in India. This initiative particularly focuses on catering to lower and middle-income groups, aligning with the government’s goals of providing accessible and sustainable transportation.
The Amrit Bharat series started in 2023 and quickly gained popularity. Currently, eight routes are up and running, connecting smaller towns to major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The new Amrit Bharat 3.0 trains will feature dual-class arrangements, offering general, sleeper, and air-conditioned compartments, along with improved pantry services. This combination of comfort and affordability is crucial for meeting the rising demand for travel in India, according to industry experts.
Sustainability and safety are also key features of these trains. They will include energy-efficient systems, modern toilets, and advanced braking technology. Inspired by the Vande Bharat Express, there will be continuous LED lighting and better seating, enhancing the overall travel experience. Each train will carry around 2,600 passengers, making it a vital part of Indian Railways’ plan to shift more people to rail, reducing congestion and emissions on the roads.
Officials plan to manufacture and operate 100 Amrit Bharat trains over the next few years. This expansion will improve connectivity in semi-urban and rural areas, making it easier for people to access education, healthcare, and job opportunities. It could also boost domestic tourism, allowing cost-sensitive travelers to explore cultural and leisure destinations more easily.
A recent survey by the Ministry of Railways indicated that over 70% of Indians prefer rail travel for affordability and comfort. This trend is significant as it suggests a growing reliance on railways for everyday travel, further highlighting the need for improved infrastructure.
As these trains roll out, they promise to stimulate local economies by increasing passenger flows, thus supporting regional tourism and productivity. For a nation that heavily relies on rail for budget-friendly mobility, the Amrit Bharat 3.0 represents a crucial step toward modernization without sacrificing inclusivity.
With the new Amrit Bharat 3.0 trains, Indian Railways aims to create a fairer, greener, and more connected travel experience for millions of passengers across the country.
