Discover Affordable Well Water Testing: Lake County Health Department Slashes Prices for Residents!

WAUKEGAN — To celebrate National Groundwater Awareness Week, the Lake County Health Department is reducing the cost of well water testing for homeowners who rely on well water for drinking.

From March 10 to March 21, the usual $25 fee for testing bacteria and nitrates will drop to $20.

“Water is vital for everything we do, whether we’re drinking, cooking, or cleaning,” said Lawrence Mackey, the director of environmental health. “Testing your well water annually ensures it’s safe and healthy for your family.”

Homeowners can pick up sterile test bottles and instructions at several locations, including the Lake County Central Permit Facility at 500 W. Winchester Road in Libertyville and the Health Department headquarters at 3010 Grand Ave. in Waukegan. There are also 19 township and municipal offices throughout Lake County where you can find these materials. If you’d like to know the nearest location, call 847-377-8020 or visit lakecountyil.gov/726/water-wells. If you prefer, water sampling kits can be mailed for $20, plus shipping.

Be sure to bring your water samples to the Lake County Central Permit Facility between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. You can expect results in about three business days. If you need help, the Health Department offers an option for staff to visit your home for $69. They will collect the sample, inspect your well, and provide lab results for bacteria and nitrates.
