It’s no secret that Downtown Evanston offers a wonderful variety of cuisines, all within a short distance from Northwestern’s campus. However, if you’re in the mood for Afghan food, you’ll need to travel a bit further. Kabul House, located on Dempster Street near the western edge of Evanston, is worth the two-mile journey. While it’s a bit of a splurge, the food and welcoming atmosphere make it perfect for a special night out.
Inside Kabul House, you’ll find a modern, cozy design that feels inviting, thanks in large part to the friendly staff. They really bring a warm touch to your dining experience.
Heading there with friends is ideal. The menu encourages sharing, so plan to order a few dishes and split the bill.
One standout dish is the date salad ($13.95). With fresh romaine, crunchy greens, walnuts, and gorgonzola cheese, it’s a delightful combination. The pomegranate vinaigrette adds a vibrant kick without overpowering the salad.
The chicken kabob skewer ($10.95) was a highlight—crispy on the outside and tender inside. The zesty sauce adds just the right amount of flavor.
On the pricier side, the filet mignon shish skewer ($17.95) wasn’t as impressive. While it wasn’t bland, it didn’t have the robust flavor you’d expect for the cost.
On the other hand, the shrimp kabob ($21.95) was tremendous. Served with rice and grilled veggies, the shrimp was so fresh it practically danced on your plate.
Unfortunately, the kabuli palau ($22.95) didn’t hit the mark. The meat lacked flavor and the portion was a bit small, though the Afghan rice was excellent.
The rice surprised me—cooked with carrots and raisins, it had a subtle sweetness that worked surprisingly well as a base for the savory dishes.
Extras like complimentary naan bread were a nice touch, even if the bread was a bit dry. The spicy tomato chutney and cilantro chutney paired nicely with the dishes and brought extra flavor to the meal.
We rounded off our dinner with dessert. The pistachio baklava ($5.95) was sweet and rich, a perfect finish. The chocolate mousse cake ($8.95) was a delightful burst of flavor, capping off a great meal.
Kabul House is definitely worth a visit, especially for special occasions. It has put Afghan cuisine on the map in Evanston, and its quality food and service deserve more recognition.
