Bao Bei, a delightful Taiwanese street food spot, is set to open its first restaurant in Rockville, Maryland, on August 27. This new venture follows its success as a finalist on Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race,” where it competed under the watchful eye of renowned chef Tyler Florence.
Located in Federal Realty’s Montrose Crossing, the restaurant spans 1,900 square feet and is situated next to Kosmo Nail Bar. Chef Kevin Hsieh, a Montgomery County native and a Gaithersburg High School graduate, explains that “Bao Bei” is a term of endearment in Taiwanese, referring to something or someone cherished.
Hsieh chose to stay close to this community, with their ghost kitchen just a mile away. The menu features traditional bao sandwiches, steamed dumplings, and sweet treats like swirly buns and almond tofu, appealing to a wide range of taste buds.
Interestingly, the rise of food trucks and street food has become a notable trend in recent years, especially during the pandemic. Many chefs have embraced this model, leading to a new wave of culinary creativity. According to a recent survey by IBISWorld, the food truck industry has experienced steady growth, with revenue projected to reach $1 billion this year.
Hsieh’s team garnered significant attention in the food scene, finishing in second place on the show’s latest season. This accomplishment not only highlighted their culinary skills but also boosted their popularity, placing them firmly in the local food landscape.
