Beaufort County, S.C. is taking a bold step towards sustainability with a new composting pilot program. This initiative, designed to help residents dispose of food waste, aims to lessen landfill mass and convert scraps into valuable compost for the community.
Starting now, residents can drop off their food waste at four key locations:
- Shanklin Convenience Center: 80 Shanklin Road
- Bluffton Convenience Center: 104 Simmonsville Road
- St. Helena Island Convenience Center: 639 Sea Island Parkway
- Hilton Head Island Convenience Center: 26 Summit Drive
Before making a trip, residents should check out the Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling composting website. There’s also a brief training video to watch and a quick quiz to complete. These steps will give residents a unique PIN for access to the drop-off bins.
Experts believe that composting can significantly impact our environment. According to the EPA, food waste makes up 22% of what we throw away. By composting, we can turn this into nutrient-rich soil, benefiting gardens and local ecosystems.
Training is crucial. It helps ensure that only suitable items go into the bins, reducing contamination. There will be more training sessions, both virtual and in-person, for those interested.
