I’ve spent most of my life in Boston, so I know the city’s charm well. Although I haven’t had the classic “tourist” experience, I can point out some spots that are definitely worth a visit. Boston is filled with history and fantastic food, making it a top destination for visitors. But with so many choices, it can be tough to decide where to go. Here are four must-try food stops for anyone visiting Boston for the first time.
Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market
Faneuil Hall is a historical gem over 275 years old. It was a gathering place during the Revolutionary War and still draws crowds today. Just across the street, you’ll find Quincy Market, the oldest and largest food hall in the U.S., established in 1826. Here, you can sample a variety of local foods.
For something sweet, grab a babka from Bakey. If seafood is what you’re after, the Boston & Maine Fish Company offers delicious lobster rolls. My favorite as a child was always the mac and cheese from mmMac N Cheese, which you can pair with a grilled cheese for a filling meal.
Boston Public Market
Just a short walk from Faneuil Hall is Boston Public Market—an indoor farmer’s market open year-round. With over 30 vendors, it focuses on local New England products. This nonprofit market benefits community education, so your dollars contribute to a good cause.
You can enjoy fresh produce, baked goods, and drinks. On my last visit, I enjoyed a cortado from George Howell Coffee and a cider slush from Red Apple Farm. If you have dietary restrictions, like being gluten-free, you’ll find many options. Influencer Phil Hates Gluten showcased gluten-free cupcakes and crepes from the Market that are well-loved by locals.
Modern Pastry
While many tourists flock to Mike’s Pastry for cannolis, I suggest visiting Modern Pastry instead. It’s less crowded but just as traditional. This family-run spot has been around since 1930 and offers gluten-free cannoli shells. Alongside their famous cannolis, you can find desserts like tiramisu and imported Italian goods. Plus, at night, the shop transforms into a lively bar.
Regina Pizzeria
No visit to Boston is complete without a slice from Regina Pizzeria. Open since 1926, Regina is known for its cheesy, delicious pizza. In fact, TripAdvisor ranked it as the top pizza restaurant in the U.S. in 2018. You can find Regina locations all over Boston, including one near Fenway Park. Their classic cheese slice is always a hit, but don’t miss out on their specialty pies like the Prosciutto con Spinaci.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between sightseeing or enjoying a relaxed meal, these food stops will give you a taste of Boston’s culinary history.
