SPHEREx, or the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer, is NASA’s latest infrared space telescope. It’s a big deal in our quest to understand how the universe has changed over time.

Launched as part of NASA’s Medium Explorer program in 2019, SPHEREx will conduct an all-sky survey. Its goals are ambitious: to uncover how galaxies formed, study where water comes from in star systems, and investigate ice in space. These insights are crucial for understanding our cosmos.

One remarkable feature of SPHEREx is its ability to capture a wide range of wavelengths—from 0.75 to 5.0 microns—allowing it to see through dust that hides visible light. This capability is crucial for studying distant celestial objects.

SPHEREx will make four passes over the sky in a two-year mission, examining light from countless cosmic objects. By processing infrared light and assigning visible colors to these wavelengths, scientists can learn about the makeup of different objects and even their distances. This research could shed light on everything from the early universe to the origins of water in our galaxy.

How does SPHEREx work? Light enters the telescope and splits into two paths, leading to six detectors that each analyze 17 wavelength bands. This setup creates a detailed spectrum with 102 unique hues in every exposure. Unlike traditional filters that restrict certain colors, SPHEREx uses special filters that gradually change, capturing a broader spectrum of light.

Since the launch, SPHEREx has been undergoing testing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. So far, everything is operating smoothly. The detectors have cooled to about -210°C, vital for detecting infrared light without interference from the heat of the telescope itself. Early images have confirmed that the focus is perfect—good news for engineers since this focus can’t be adjusted once in orbit.

Olivier Doré, the SPHEREx project scientist, expressed excitement over the mission’s progress, noting that "our spacecraft has opened its eyes on the universe and is performing just as designed."

Astronomers around the world are eagerly anticipating the start of operations later this month. This mission represents a crucial step forward in our understanding of the universe’s evolution. SPHEREx promises to create a three-dimensional map of the cosmos like we’ve never seen before.

Recent studies indicate that the exploration of the universe could lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of life beyond Earth. With growing interest in astrobiology, missions like SPHEREx will likely play a key role in answering questions about the origins of life in the universe.
