CBS has shared its fall schedule for the upcoming season, making headlines for its low number of comedies. This year, only two half-hour comedies will air, a record low for the network.
The lineup features familiar favorites, with FBI taking Mondays, NCIS on Tuesdays, Fire Country on Fridays, and a new Thursday pairing from Robert and Michelle King. Long-time staples Ghosts and Matlock won’t return until midseason. New dramas, including NCIS: New York, Cupertino, and Einstein, will join the slate.
Amy Reisenbach, CBS’s Entertainment President, praised their lineup, noting strong returning shows like Tracker and Marshals, which alternate as the top-rated series. “We have a triple threat and are not going to mess with perfection,” she said.
The network aims to maintain its status on Fridays with Sheriff Country, Fire Country, and Boston Blue. They’ve dominated the ratings on that night for 16 years. Similarly, Survivor and The Amazing Race continue to claim high viewership on Wednesdays.
The usual Monday comedy block has shifted. The Neighborhood and the canceled DMV are gone, making way for a full hour of FBI programming. This decision may reflect changing viewer habits, as audiences increasingly favor longer, more dramatic formats.
On Tuesdays, the NCIS brand remains strong, with rotations for NCIS: New York, featuring LL Cool J, and a reduced order for NCIS: Sydney returning midseason.
The comedy landscape is evolving, with CBS focusing on hour-long shows that include comedic elements. Elsbeth, which transitioned from drama to comedy at the Emmys, is one such example. This shift mirrors broader industry trends where humorous content often blends with drama to capture diverse viewer interests.
