WASHINGTON – Opera tenor Christopher Macchio is set to perform the national anthem at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. He was hoping for a large crowd but will have to settle for a much smaller audience due to the cold weather.
The inauguration will take place indoors in the Capitol Rotunda, which can accommodate only 600 people. This is a far cry from the expected 250,000 guests who were to gather at the National Mall.
“I was looking forward to a big crowd,” said Macchio, 46. “But performing is still a great honor.” He believes performing indoors is a good thing for his voice. Cold weather can be tough on vocalists, so under these conditions, he should be able to deliver a better performance.
Macchio’s connection with Trump started about nine years ago. He filled in last minute for a New Year’s Eve celebration, and his performance was well-received. That night, Trump invited him to sing at his 70th birthday party. The two got closer when Macchio sang at the White House memorial service for Trump’s brother Robert in 2020.
Since then, Macchio has performed for Trump at several events, including the Republican National Convention and various rallies. It was during one of his performances in Butler, Pennsylvania, that Trump told him to expect him at the inauguration.
A few weeks later, Macchio learned he was the “first and only choice” to sing the national anthem. He knows he’s following in the footsteps of other famous performers. Lady Gaga sang at Joe Biden’s inauguration, and Beyoncé performed at Obama’s second swearing-in.
Despite some backlash for his ties to Trump, Macchio hopes people will appreciate the music. “I understand some may disagree with Trump, but I hope they will connect with the anthem and what it represents,” he said. “This is about honoring our country.”
Macchio is also passionate about music education. He is talking to the administration about ways to promote classical music in schools.
Before the inauguration, he plans to rehearse with fellow performers Carrie Underwood and Lee Greenwood in the Capitol Rotunda. Macchio emphasizes his traditional approach to singing the anthem. He aims to deliver a straightforward rendition but might stretch a few high notes for flair.
