Space is vast. For us to reach our nearest star, we would probably age and die before we ever arrived. This reality drives scientists to think of ways to make long journeys feasible for humans. One idea is to create “generational ships.” These vessels would support human life for many generations while traveling to distant planets.

A recent initiative, Project Hyperion, sparked interest in designing such ships. Teams competed to create a spaceship that could carry people to a planet located 250 years away. The winning design, “Chrysalis,” aims to transport thousands to Alpha Centauri over a journey lasting over 400 years. It features a simple, tubular design prioritized for safety during acceleration.

The ship’s shape minimizes stress during long journeys, especially when speeding up to 0.01% of the speed of light. The majority of its mass would be liquid fuel stored in large tanks. Inside, rotating sections would generate artificial gravity, helping combat the negative health impacts of long-term weightlessness. According to John Page, a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering, larger ships can rotate slowly enough to create gravity without causing discomfort due to varying gravitational pull across the body.

Building a ship like Chrysalis would be a monumental task. It could weigh around 2.4 billion tons and span over 58 kilometers (36 miles) long. Scientists propose constructing it at Lagrange points, stable locations in space that require minimal fuel to maintain position, between the Earth and Moon.

Construction would take 20 to 25 years, but future generations would be the ones to complete the mission. The initial inhabitants might spend 70 to 80 years training in isolated environments, like Antarctica, to prepare for this journey. The psychological aspects of leaving Earth and living in space are crucial for maintaining morale. The team believes inhabitants need to feel part of a grand adventure, forging a new identity as they travel through the cosmos.

The design of Chrysalis also considers how future communities might live and interact. It envisions a society where humans, robots, and AI collaborate, sharing experiences and decision-making. The creators stress that living in deep space will shape the psychological experiences of the inhabitants, turning them into unique space travelers.

This design won praise for its innovative approach to challenges like radiation protection. It drew comparisons to classic sci-fi concepts while showcasing a deep commitment to story and design. While these plans are still in the realm of ideas, it’s exciting to think about the possibilities if humanity ever ventures beyond our Solar System.
