February 23, 2026, Colombo: CIFOR-ICRAF’s Sri Lanka Country Office was part of the 30th International Forestry and Environment Symposium held on January 23-24 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. Organized by the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, this event gathered researchers, government officials, and development partners under the theme “Sustainability in Action.”
During the symposium, CIFOR-ICRAF highlighted its mission to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable land management in vulnerable landscapes in Sri Lanka.
The Knuckles Landscape
Dr. Prasad Senadheera, the Country Director and Principal Investigator of the GCF Knuckles Project, represented CIFOR-ICRAF. He discussed how agroforestry can aid ecosystem restoration and boost the livelihoods of rural communities.
Alongside the Project Management Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALLI), CIFOR-ICRAF showcased progress from the GCF Knuckles Project. This initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience for subsistence farmers and plantation communities around the Knuckles Mountain Range.
A dedicated booth provided insights into the project’s findings and initiatives. Visitors learned about nature-based approaches that help reduce climate risks and promote sustainable land use.
Disaster Risk Reduction
A key discussion at the symposium focused on “The Importance of Ecosystem Services Towards Disaster Risk Reduction,” specifically regarding Cyclone Ditwah. Dr. Senadheera highlighted the role of agroforestry and healthy ecosystems in mitigating the effects of extreme weather. His insights were underpinned by CIFOR-ICRAF’s work in the Knuckles region, where ecosystem services act as natural buffers to protect communities and farmland.
He stressed the need for improved research on Cyclone Ditwah to enhance Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness efforts. According to recent studies, 34 million people are currently at risk of climate-related disasters in South Asia, emphasizing the urgency of effective strategies.
CIFOR-ICRAF Sri Lanka remains dedicated to supporting practical solutions based on solid evidence. Their research and partnerships aim to advance sustainability and resilience across the country, benefiting both the environment and local communities.
