On April 3, the Elon community celebrated a beloved tradition: the return of the Elon Farmers Market. This 18-year-old event has brought excitement to many, including Elon senior Lauren Dathe, who eagerly awaited its start. “I’ve been counting down the days,” she shared.

For others, like senior Sam Hinton, it’s a chance to foster community connections. “It’s great to see people from the community come out,” he mentioned. Hinton highlighted how the market helps bridge gaps between Elon and the surrounding areas.

Sarah Bass, the market manager, reported that they’re expecting around 25 stands each week. This number will vary as crops come in and out of season. “There are so many unique things people want to sell,” she added, emphasizing the market’s diversity and charm.

This year, the market will feature more community organizations, including the public library and Alamance Community College. These groups aim to provide educational opportunities alongside the food and goods. “That’s part of why we’re out there, too, is to educate,” Bass explained.

New vendors have also joined the market, like Jonathan McCauley from Wild Lavender Apothecary. He and his wife are passionate about supporting the local economy. “We love investing in small communities,” he said, reflecting a growing trend among small businesses to create local partnerships.

Returning vendors are excited too. Brittney McCauley helped customers find perfect scents at their booth, while Branwyn Aday of Asgard Farm expressed joy in interacting with young visitors during the summer. “I look forward to answering their questions,” she noted.

The market itself has an interesting history. It began in 2007 with Elon Community Church and later transitioned to the nonprofit Authentically Alamance Farmers Market Network. Just two years ago, it came under the town of Elon’s management, allowing it to expand its offerings and community reach.

As discussions about local economies continue, anecdotes from vendors demonstrate a rising trend in supporting local agriculture. A recent survey from the American Farm Bureau Federation found that 77% of Americans view farmers’ markets as an important part of their communities. As the world embraces sustainability, markets like the one in Elon play a key role in connecting people with fresh produce and unique local goods.

Dathe reflected on the market’s appeal, saying, “Out of all the farmer’s markets I’ve been to, it’s pretty low-key, and I like that.” This casual atmosphere and community spirit are what keep attendees coming back week after week.

With this blend of new and returning elements, the Elon Farmers Market not only supports local businesses but cultivates a sense of community and connection among residents.
