This past weekend, around 300 volunteers gathered at Evanston Township High School to help with a food drive. They accepted donations, packed food into boxes and bags, and got ready to distribute these items to community members. The event was heartwarming, showcasing the spirit of giving and support in Evanston.
This was the third food drive hosted at the school. The need for such initiatives grew after the Trump administration froze Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds, impacting many families. The first event aimed to collect food for local pantries, but due to high demand, organizers adapted their approach over time.
This time, instead of allowing people to shop freely, organizers decided to hand out pre-packaged food bundles. They included essential items like oil, beans, pasta, sugar, rice, toilet paper, and even diapers. By preparing these bundles in advance, the team aimed to ensure everyone received a fair share without having to police how much each person took.
Erin Claeys, the community service coordinator at ETHS, emphasized the need for this change. “In our last event, we tried to impose limits, but it was challenging. This new method helps everyone get what they need more evenly,” she said.
Before the drive, volunteers worked hard to fundraise for the items. They aimed to gather 300 of each essential product. Donations collected during the event would be a bonus, helping them prepare for about 300 attendees. The team also set up a U-Haul truck at a local event to gather additional donations, further expanding support for the food drive.
In today’s world, food insecurity remains a pressing issue. According to the USDA, about 10.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity in 2021.
