It’s opening night at the Outside Bites food pop-up in midtown Sacramento. This vibrant event features a range of delicious options, from wood-fired pizzas to BBQ burgers and fresh fruit drinks. It occupies a space that once housed an auto shop, which was destroyed in a two-alarm fire in 2017. For years, the lot at 17th and J streets remained empty, but now it’s buzzing with life.
Organizer Casey Mann believes this event is a great way to showcase Sacramento’s diverse food culture. “Sacramento’s culinary scene is fantastic but often overlooked,” he remarked.
The pop-up hosts around 18 rotating food vendors each month, giving small businesses like I Heart Burgers a chance to attract new customers. Erica Smith from I Heart Burgers shared, “This helps us get our name out there without the hefty start-up costs of opening a restaurant. I want to build my brand first.”
Mann added, “You don’t need a full restaurant to make great food. Every vendor here deserves recognition.”
Since opening, Outside Bites has already started to draw crowds back to this high-profile spot on J Street. Customer Amber Solsa expressed her excitement, saying, “We wanted to check out the food trucks, and it’s been amazing!”
Admission is free, and there are shaded seating areas and portable restrooms available, making it easy for families and groups to enjoy the event.
According to recent studies, food pop-ups are not just trendy; they’re reshaping urban dining experiences. Reports show that pop-up venues can increase foot traffic in struggling areas, crucial for rebuilding communities after events like the fire that closed the auto shop. These venues often rely on social media for marketing, with hashtags and posts driving interest and engagement.
As people increasingly seek unique dining experiences, Outside Bites aligns perfectly with this trend. It’s not just about eating; it’s about creating a community hub where local flavors shine.
So, if you’re in the neighborhood, take some time to explore and support the local food scene at Outside Bites. You’ll find a little something for everyone!
