Discover Dhaka’s Air Quality: Moderate AQI Score of 71 – What It Means for You!

Dhaka was recently ranked 42nd in the world for air quality. On Thursday morning, it had an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 71, according to IQAir. This score indicates that the air quality was "moderate," which has been the case for three days in a row.

When the AQI falls between 51 and 100, it’s considered moderate. Those who are sensitive to air quality should think about reducing their outdoor activities during these times. As the AQI rises, the health risks increase: scores from 101 to 150 are unhealthy for sensitive groups, while those from 151 to 200 are unhealthy for everyone. A reading above 200 is very unhealthy, and anything above 300 poses serious risks.

It’s alarming to note that Delhi, Lahore, and Hanoi are currently the most polluted cities, with AQI scores of 189, 174, and 171, respectively.

In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five main pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone levels.

Air pollution is a serious global issue. According to the World Health Organization, it causes around seven million premature deaths yearly. These deaths are mainly linked to diseases like stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory infections.

Interestingly, a recent survey found that nearly 80% of Dhaka’s residents are concerned about air quality. Many have turned to air purifiers at home and masks outdoors to protect their health. Social media discussions often feature tips on reducing personal exposure to pollution, demonstrating a growing awareness of this pressing issue.
