On May 22, 2026, Diyarbakır held a key conference to map out its environmental future through the “Zero Waste Workshop.” The city aims to officially declare 2027 as its “Zero Waste Year.” This initiative is part of a larger movement addressing recycling, water management, energy efficiency, and raising public awareness about environmental issues.
The workshop gathered various stakeholders, including the Diyarbakır Governorship, Dicle University, and several non-governmental organizations. They discussed pressing environmental challenges, focusing on waste management and solutions related to climate change.
Director of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Ufuk Nurullah Bilgin, presented a “Zero Waste Target Document” during the event. This roadmap includes a collaborative approach among municipalities, universities, and NGOs. Goals include transforming organic waste into compost, utilizing smart waste containers, collecting waste oil, and increasing green spaces throughout Diyarbakır.
At the conference, Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation, pointed out that the workshop aims to tackle real-world problems. He emphasized that, for the first time, the COP31 summit will address these local challenges. International cooperation is vital, especially given the rising global crises related to water scarcity and climate change.
Governor Murat Zorluoğlu echoed these sentiments, noting how environmental issues affect us all and stressing the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations. He highlighted that the Zero Waste Movement has already boosted recycling rates, which has significant economic benefits.
Mayor Serra Bucak highlighted the urgent nature of climate issues today, mentioning challenges such as water stress and increasing waste loads. These insights reinforce the pressing need for local solutions that can impact the global conversation on climate change.
During the workshop, experts explored 14 thematic areas related to environmental challenges. Their findings showcased Diyarbakır’s strengths, like its fertile lands and efficient transport network. However, they also identified critical weaknesses such as inadequate recycling systems and increasing energy use, which demands immediate attention.
Moving forward, the city’s efforts will continue under the newly established “Zero Waste Provincial Advisory Board.” This body will oversee projects aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and facilitating sustainable practices within Diyarbakır.
The road ahead is challenging, but the initiative offers hope. Through collective action, Diyarbakır can turn its vision of a sustainable future into reality. By engaging community members and stakeholders, the city is poised to set a powerful example in the fight against climate change.
