Dorset Council and BCP Council are teaming up for a decade-long effort to restore and protect Dorset’s natural environment. Their plan, the Dorset Local Nature Recovery Strategy, aims to reverse declines in local nature.
This strategy was shaped by input from local farmers, community members, and environmental experts, with help from Natural England. It will guide decisions on land use, climate resilience, and public health.
Cllr Nick Ireland, leader of Dorset Council, emphasized the importance of the region’s natural assets, saying, “This strategy is a turning point. It signals an end to decline and a strong focus on recovery.” He believes everyone in Dorset has a stake in this initiative, which aims for cleaner rivers and thriving ecosystems.
The strategy outlines practical steps to meet the national target of protecting or managing 30% of land, rivers, and seas for nature by 2030. It includes 13 key priorities, each supported by detailed habitat maps. Major focuses are on restoring grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands, especially Dorset’s unique chalk streams. Other goals include safeguarding coastal areas and enhancing green spaces in urban settings.
Recent data reveals that biodiversity loss remains a pressing issue in the UK, with 41% of species in decline. Community engagement is crucial. A 2022 survey showed 78% of residents support local conservation efforts. This collective enthusiasm can drive meaningful change in the natural landscape.
