Astronomers have made an exciting discovery in space: a new exoplanet named Enaiposha, located about 47 light-years from Earth. Initially considered a mini-Neptune, this planet has revealed unique features that make scientists rethink its classification. They are now calling it a super-Venus.

Originally, Enaiposha, or GJ 1214 b, was thought to resemble typical mini-Neptunes—planets smaller than Neptune with thick, gaseous atmospheres. However, using the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers found that this planet shares more traits with Venus than previously believed.

The new classification comes from the planet’s dense atmosphere, which includes elements like hydrogen, helium, water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide. A study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, led by astronomers Everett Schlawin and Kazumasa Ohno, revealed faint traces of these gases in the planet’s atmosphere.

Unlike other mini-Neptunes found in our galaxy, Enaiposha proves to be a puzzle. While planets in this category usually have thick atmospheres, Enaiposha stands out due to its hazes and aerosols, which complicate atmospheric studies. Venus, known for its dense clouds, has a similar issue, but Enaiposha is even more challenging to analyze.

During the planet’s transit across its star, scientists observed specific light wavelengths being absorbed, pointing to the presence of metal-rich elements and gases like carbon dioxide and methane. These findings suggest a complex atmosphere that wasn’t expected initially.

One of the most notable discoveries is the faint signal of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, a gas often linked to the runaway greenhouse effect experienced on Venus. Kazumasa Ohno, a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, emphasized the significance of this discovery: “The detected CO2 signal from the first study is tiny, and so it required careful statistical analysis to ensure that it is real.”

Although conditions on Enaiposha make it unlikely to support life, studying its atmosphere could provide crucial insights into how exoplanets develop. Understanding these processes might help researchers explore planetary climates and potential life-supporting environments in the future.

The discovery of Enaiposha opens doors to new questions about how planets form and evolve. Its unique characteristics suggest that planets like it may undergo transitions from mini-Neptunes into more complex worlds. This could help scientists comprehend the variety of exoplanets in our galaxy and their potential for habitability, despite Enaiposha itself not being suitable for life.
