A new hospital has opened in D.C.’s Ward 8, a big win for a community that has often struggled with access to healthcare. The Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health is here to change that.
Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with D.C. Council members and health experts, celebrated the hospital’s opening at the former St. Elizabeth’s Hospital site. Mayor Bowser expressed her pride, saying, “I made the promise in 2015 that we would be here today, and we’ve done it.”
This facility boasts 136 beds, trauma care, and an emergency department with 54 bays, ready to handle a variety of health needs. For mothers, it offers a labor and delivery unit, a well-baby nursery with six beds, and a Level II NICU for newborns needing extra care. There are also five operating rooms and an outpatient pavilion.
Council member Christina Henderson highlighted the significance of the new labor and delivery unit, noting that it’s been since 2019 that mothers in this area could give birth in a hospital.
Dr. Anthony Coleman, the hospital’s CEO, aims to connect deeply with the community. “Listening to the people closest to the pain is crucial,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to understanding local health challenges.
The Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center will work closely with the George Washington University Hospital and two new health centers in nearby wards. This collaboration is supported by a substantial $75 million investment from Universal Health Services, aimed at bolstering health infrastructure in the region.
A healthcare study from the D.C. Department of Health showed that many residents in Ward 8 face barriers to receiving care. With this new hospital, there’s hope for better health outcomes and increased accessibility for the community.
