Discover Eric Dane’s Inspiring Journey in TIME100 Health: A Look at His Impact and Resilience

For many fans, Eric Dane will always be the dashing Dr. Mark Sloan from Grey’s Anatomy. However, in a surprising twist, he now finds himself facing a serious health challenge. In April 2025, Dane publicly shared that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects around 350,000 people globally. Unfortunately, ALS has no cure, and most individuals experience a life expectancy of only 2 to 5 years after symptoms begin.

As he comes to terms with this diagnosis, Dane has transformed his journey into a mission of advocacy. He has joined the board of the nonprofit organization Target ALS, helping it exceed its fundraising goals and raise more than $500,000 for critical research. Additionally, he launched the “Push for Progress” campaign in collaboration with I AM ALS. This three-year initiative seeks to secure over $1 billion in federal funding for ALS research, a cause Dane is passionately committed to.

In a notable appearance on NBC’s Brilliant Minds, Dane reflected on the struggles faced by those living with ALS. He stated, “I’m trying to save my life, and if my actions can move the needle forward for myself and countless others, I’m satisfied.”

ALS affects the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. The need for research and funding has never been more pressing. According to recent statistics, $400 million is currently allocated annually for ALS research, but experts argue that this amount falls short. Many advocates call for increased financial support to make significant strides in understanding and treating the disease.

Dane’s journey has sparked conversations on social platforms, with many users sharing their experiences and support. His willingness to speak out has not only highlighted the reality of ALS but has also inspired a community dedicated to fighting for better resources for those affected. By sharing his story, Dane aims to shed light on an often-overlooked disease and motivate others to join the effort.
