Researchers followed a group from Helsinki born between 1934 and 1944 for 30 years, looking at how factors like body mass index (BMI), blood sugar levels, and blood pressure affect health outcomes. While these known risks play a significant role, the study revealed there are still many unexplained elements contributing to illness.

To tackle chronic diseases, experts suggest we explore new potential risk factors, including environmental and psychological influences. It’s crucial to adopt prevention strategies early in life to help curb the rise of multimorbidity.

Another study examined the movement habits of older adults (ages 65–94) in Spain. Researchers assessed the impact of physical activity on a concept called "intrinsic capacity," which refers to the overall health abilities of an individual. They found that more time spent sitting linked with lower intrinsic capacity, while moderate-to-vigorous physical activity showed positive effects. Interestingly, light physical activities did not have the same benefit. This underscores the need for promoting more vigorous exercise as we age.

Moreover, sedentary behavior could also influence brain health. A study from the Vanderbilt Memory and Aging Project tracked 404 older adults over seven years. It found that longer sedentary periods were related to poorer memory and cognitive function, particularly for those at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Exercise seems to be a powerful ally in cancer recovery. A notable trial involving colon cancer patients showed that a structured exercise program led to significantly better disease-free survival rates when compared to patients receiving only health education.

Despite the known benefits of physical activity, engaging older adults in exercise is challenging. A recent study tested a 12-week program designed to tackle sedentary behavior among diverse seniors. This intervention, which included personalized coaching and activity trackers, was well-received. Participants appreciated the approach, indicating it could inform future health programs.
