MOBILE, Ala. — Recently, hundreds of students gathered at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf to explore exciting career paths in the maritime industry. This event, called Maritime Career Discovery Day, aimed to connect students with potential job opportunities right in their community.
As students moved through the exhibit halls, many were intrigued by the wide range of careers available on the water. Javier Rodriguez, an 11th grader, shared, “The pay is good, but I’m also interested in the lifestyle—traveling and working on the water.” His classmate, Xavier Tolbert from BC Rain, added, “There are jobs here. You can work on the water.”
City officials hope to shift students’ focus from popular career choices like AI and social media influencing to the rewarding trades within the maritime sector. Amanda Frazier of Master Boat Builders encouraged students, saying, “You can start working straight out of high school. Learn some welding, and check out training programs like ADT.”
This initiative is crucial. Recent statistics show that the maritime industry supports over 31,000 jobs in Alabama, a number that continues to grow. Experts point out the industry’s stability and the demand for skilled workers, making it an attractive option for young people.
As they explored, students learned about various roles needed to keep the maritime world running. Karen Poth, Executive Director of the Maritime Museum, emphasized, “When you see a big cargo ship, think about all the jobs that made it happen—engineers, welders, and logistics experts.”
With around 800 students attending, most from Mobile and Baldwin County schools, the day was filled with insight. They learned about job requirements, potential salaries, and the skills needed in this field. This focus on career education not only reveals available jobs but also aligns with growing industry needs, making it a win-win for students and the economy.
