Limerick City and County Council is teaming up with local communities to celebrate Climate Action Week, running until May 16. This week is all about bringing people together and promoting sustainable practices in Limerick. Dr. Sarah O’Malley, the climate action officer, emphasizes that this week shows real change is happening. From workshops to community gatherings, there’s something for everyone. Every bit of participation helps build a more sustainable Limerick.
All events are free and open to the public. However, some require advance booking due to limited space. Check out the full schedule on Limerick.ie.
Here’s a peek at the week’s activities:
May 14: Join a book reading and swap at the Hunt Museum from 4-6 PM. Bring a book to exchange and enjoy some quiet reading time.
May 15: Participate in the PolliConnect Biodiversity Focus Group from 10 AM to 12 PM at Kilmallock Library. Community members can share ideas on local biodiversity projects like grasslands and pollinator habitats.
In the afternoon, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the Citizen Innovation Lab will host a free workshop on clothing repair. Learn valuable skills such as stitching and patching.
May 16: Start your Saturday with a peaceful mindfulness and meditation session at People’s Park, from 10 AM to 12 PM. This session focuses on movement and reflection on environmental issues.
Later, at 10:30 AM, join a Woodland Walk and Talk at Baggot Estate Nature Park.
Finally, drop by Watch House Cross Library from 11 AM to 4 PM for “Crafty Saturday,” a family-friendly craft session that promotes reusing materials.
These activities align with a broader push for ecological awareness. According to recent surveys, over 60% of community members believe local climate initiatives can foster collaboration and innovation. As people engage with the environment, they often feel a greater connection to their community.
Events like Climate Action Week not only raise awareness but also empower individuals to take actionable steps toward sustainability. Whether it’s through a simple book swap or learning new skills, every effort counts in creating a greener future.
