Ford Motor Company is on the move! The carmaker is shifting its headquarters for the first time in 70 years, relocating just three miles away in Dearborn, Michigan. This new space is called the “Ford World Headquarters.” It’s massive—almost double the size of the old one and equipped to support more employees.

The new headquarters boasts impressive features, including a 160,000-square-foot food hall with seven restaurants, design studios, fabrication shops, and an eye-catching showroom. Jennifer Kolstad, Ford Land’s global design director, calls this showroom the “crown jewel” of the building, comparing it to a “James Bond villain’s lair.” It’s designed not just for aesthetics but also for crucial decision-making and showcasing new products.

The old headquarters, known as “The Glass House,” has served since 1956 and will soon be demolished. Experts like Erik Gordon from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business explain that Ford’s move is part of a larger strategy. The company is looking to attract talent, particularly in software and AI. As competition heats up for these skilled workers, Ford realizes it must create an appealing workplace.

“Ford wants to be seen as a forward-thinking company,” says Gordon. “They no longer want to be viewed as just the carmaker from the past.” The new HQ reflects this ambition, promoting collaboration and breaking down barriers between executives and employees.

When fully operational, the new headquarters will host over 14,000 employees within a quick walk. This is a significant change from the separation experienced at The Glass House. Jim Dobleske, CEO of Ford Land, emphasizes that this design encourages teamwork, saying, “You know you are walking into Ford Motor Company” the moment you step inside.

The move also mirrors trends within the automotive industry. General Motors is similarly relocating its headquarters to a new office building downtown, striving for a modern and innovative image.

Notably, according to a recent report, nearly 70% of employees believe a dynamic, well-designed workplace enhances job satisfaction and productivity. This underscores Ford’s decision to invest in a modern environment designed to attract and retain top talent in a competitive landscape.

As the construction wraps up and the grand-opening celebration nears, Ford is positioned to symbolize a new era. The new headquarters isn’t just a building; it’s a statement about the future of the company and the automobile industry.
