As warm weather approaches, more people are excited to travel. Airports are crowded. Flights are selling out. Many are heading to Europe again, even if it’s a bit of a hassle. Just ask anyone who’s flown recently.

Having spent much of my life abroad, I’ve seen some amazing places. Yet, there are still spots I haven’t explored, like Madagascar. It seems even the locals aren’t sure where it is! With many New Yorkers leaving their comfy condos for European adventures, you might wonder: is it worth it?

What to Expect in Europe

Let’s talk about France. Yes, the food and fashion are incredible, but the costs can hit hard. A meal in Paris can be pricey, even if the atmosphere is charming. Once, I visited a gas station and asked the attendant to help clean my windshield. I received an oily rag and a not-so-friendly “Do it yourself.” The service culture can be surprising. But bring a furry friend like my Yorkie, Jazzy, and suddenly, everyone’s loving and friendly. They’ll even give her water and food!

A Pricey Affair

Traveling can be expensive. In London, a decent hotel can set you back around $1,500 a night. Rome is booked up this Holy Year, so maybe consider the Amalfi Coast. Yes, it’s pricey at $4,000, but that includes breakfast! Even as costs rise, some destinations remain more affordable, like Prague and parts of Spain and Poland. But watch out for Portugal—it’s beautiful and has some high-profile guests in Cascais, just outside Lisbon.

At a recent dinner in Cascais, I sat next to a man in a nice blue suit. We chatted, and I learned his name was “Rei,” which means king in Portuguese. I almost made a connection with the former king of Portugal without even knowing it!

Exciting Destinations

Japan is booming in tourism, breaking records just last year. Bhutan offers stunning views but is quite remote. And then there’s Abu Dhabi. At the Emirates Palace, even the toilets are high-tech—controlled by an iPad. Talk about luxury! But if you’re on a budget, consider renting an Airbnb. You might score a place in Hyde Park or the Champs-Élysées for about $1,299 a night, which can be worth it if you’re traveling with friends.

Thinking about the South Pacific? Just remember, it’s rainy season. I arrived at my little thatched hut during a downpour. The rain just didn’t stop. In the end, I was drenched, while Joan Crawford, who starred in the movie “Rain,” was definitely drier.

So as travel picks up, expect some highs and lows. Whether it’s love for your pet, unexpected encounters, or the realities of hotel prices, every trip holds a little adventure. What memories will you create on your next journey?
