The Manning Farmers Market opens on Saturday, June 14. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate local produce, support farmers, and build community.
Located at the corner of Bryce and Church streets, the market will be open every Saturday until October, from 8 a.m. to noon. Expect to see familiar vendors like JMac Produce, Costas Farms, and others soon to be announced. There’s plenty of fresh and homemade goodness to savor.
Carrie Trebil, the Tourism and Main Street Manning Director, emphasizes how significant this market is. “It’s not just about fresh food. It brings the community together and allows folks to connect and meet the people who grow their food.”
One standout vendor is JMac Produce. Owned by Johnny McNair, the family-run farm is just seven miles north of Manning and specializes in Southern staples like butter beans and okra.
“I started this farm over twenty years ago after working in agricultural sales,” McNair explains. He comes from a farming background, and even in his fifties, he wanted to stay connected with people through farming. His passion shines through as he engages with customers, sharing tips on the best ways to cook his produce.
McNair’s family is also heavily involved in the farm and market. His daughter, Meigs, and grandsons, John and Hogan, help out regularly. “One grandson even carries watermelons to people’s cars and usually gets a tip for his efforts,” he chuckles.
The Manning Farmers Market embodies a growing trend across the nation. It not only supports small-scale agriculture but also encourages healthier communities. The Farmers Market Coalition reveals that three out of four farmers at these markets use sustainable practices that align with organic standards. This means shoppers are getting fresh, affordable produce while supporting responsible farming.
During the market season, visitors can expect not just vegetables but also engaging stories, family traditions, and helpful cooking tips.
As local markets gain popularity, they create lasting bonds among community members. So, whether you’re looking for fresh ingredients or a friendly chat, the Manning Farmers Market is a great place to be.
