Discover Fresh Local Delights at the New Lāna‘i Farmers Market Every First Saturday – Food, Fish, Plants & More!

The Lānaʻi Farmers Market is finally here! Starting this Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at Lāna‘i Entry Park, this vibrant market will take place on the first Saturday of every month.

This initiative, led by the County of Maui along with the Hawai‘i Farmers Union (HFU) Lāna‘i Chapter, aims to support local farmers and provide residents with fresh produce. Visitors can explore a variety of goods like vegetables, fish, eggs, and beautiful plants—all sourced from local producers.

Kali Arce, the Director of the County Department of Agriculture, emphasized how this market will enhance the community by offering more choices beyond the existing Dole Park market. “Buying locally not only supports our farmers but also boosts the local economy,” Arce said. She also pointed out that cultivating local agriculture could lessen the need for food imports, which is crucial in today’s world where supply chains can be unpredictable.

Council Member Gabe Johnson expressed enthusiasm for the market’s launch, highlighting the importance of access to fresh, affordable food, especially amidst rising food costs. “It’s a win for our farmers and our families,” he stated.

Kirsten Ham, COO of HFU, shared how markets like this create vital links between farmers and the community. They plan to cover vendor fees for the first six months to help jumpstart this initiative. Over time, the market will also expand its programs to increase food access, including support for those using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

It’s exciting to see a focus on local food security in Lāna‘i. Studies show that communities with strong local food systems tend to have better health outcomes. When residents can access fresh, locally-grown food, it leads to healthier eating habits.

If you’re on Lāna‘i and want to be a vendor, applications can be found on the County’s Agriculture page. Interested parties can reach out at lanaifarmersmarket@co.maui.hi.us or call 808-270-8276 for more information.

This new market is not just about buying and selling; it’s about building community. The hope is that it will foster connections, support local agriculture, and create a sense of belonging among residents.
