Discover Fresh, Local Goodness: Unearthing Farm and Market Brings Fresh Food to Your Atlanta Neighborhood!

Nestled between the Edgewood and Kirkwood neighborhoods, Unearthing Farm and Market has transformed from a vacant lot into a lively neighborhood farm. This non-profit organization is committed to providing affordable, fresh food to families facing economic challenges. It serves as a vital resource for healthy eating in Atlanta’s underserved areas.

Farm Director Katie Kissel shared that the vision for Unearthing began with a mission: to create a sustainable food system in Atlanta. “We want to help the Edgewood and Kirkwood communities take control of their health and food sources,” she explained. The farm operates with a focus on empowerment, community education, and soil health projects. With activities ranging from a flourishing market to educational workshops, the goal is to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.

The farm emerged during a challenging time. As the COVID-19 pandemic revealed weaknesses in global food supply chains, many felt isolated. “In 2020, we recognized a local need for food security,” Kissel noted. Unearthing Farm was born as a solution—a safe space where residents can find healthy food and connect with nature and each other.

Before its transformation, the farm site was littered with debris and invasive plants. Pastor Marquette Bugg of Edgewood Church saw potential in the neglected land. “This project turned an abandoned space into a valuable community asset,” she said. The partnership between the church and the farm has led to numerous community gatherings, volunteer opportunities, and youth programs.

The farm enriches the community in many ways, including a unique wildlife habitat. Maintenance manager Thomas Higgins sees daily interactions between residents and the farm. “People love the green space here. It offers a chance to escape the city’s hustle,” he said.

The community’s response has been positive. Many visit for the monthly market, where local produce and goods are sold. It’s a lively event with music from the Frank Hamilton School of Folk Music, creating a festive atmosphere that draws in both familiar faces and newcomers.

Kissel believes the farm’s most significant impact is its role in fighting food deserts by offering fresh, chemical-free produce. “We’ve turned a neglected lot into a point of pride for the neighborhoods,” she said. As a place of learning, it offers workshops on how to grow food, fostering a sense of ownership and participation among residents.

In addition to serving as a community space, Unearthing Farm embodies the principles of food justice. Recent studies show that urban farms can significantly improve food insecurity in city neighborhoods. According to a 2022 USDA report, urban agriculture can reduce food deserts by up to 25% in some areas. This highlights the importance of projects like Unearthing in offering sustainable, localized solutions to food access issues.

For those looking to get involved, Kissel and Bugg encourage community participation. “We welcome volunteers who share our passion for food justice,” Kissel said. Unearthing Farm and Market not only feeds the community but also cultivates a social ecosystem that strengthens bonds among residents.

In summary, Unearthing Farm is more than just a place to grow vegetables; it’s a vibrant hub for education, community gathering, and food access. In transforming a neglected space into an oasis of green, it demonstrates how local initiatives can address widespread issues and foster resilience in the community.
