Lorain County Metro Parks recently held a Silly Science program for kids on January 14 at Cascade Park in Elyria. This fun series targets children aged 2 to 5, making science exciting through hands-on activities.

Program organizer Keely Birsic, a naturalist with a background in science, wants to inspire kids with her love for experiments in chemistry and biology. “I enjoy doing science and sharing that excitement,” she said.
This month’s focus was on owls. Kids learned about these fascinating birds, including their body shape, unique features, and diet. They even got to see a real owl up close, examining its feathers and claws.
A special highlight was the dissection of owl pellets. These are the indigestible remains that owls regurgitate, such as bones. This hands-on activity allowed the children to explore and learn about the owls’ diet in a fun way.

Birsic often draws inspiration from experiments she did as a child. She plans her sessions to alternate between different science topics each month. “Next month will feature more classic experiments,” she shared.
The programs happen at several locations, including Cascade Park Nature Center and French Creek Nature Center, although not every location hosts a session each month.
Birsic spends a lot of time researching engaging projects for young children. She aims to make science approachable and enjoyable. “We usually have full sessions,” she noted, reflecting on the program’s success.
This Silly Science initiative started in March 2024 and has become an important outlet for encouraging kids to explore new hobbies that could turn into lifelong interests. Birsic is thrilled with the positive response. “The kids come back, and the parents appreciate it too,” she said.
