Discover Georgia: A Food Lover’s Ultimate Culinary Paradise!

If you’re a member of the Columbus Georgia Foodies group on Facebook, you know it’s the go-to place for local food recommendations. From barbecue to banana pudding, there’s something for everyone.

This year, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries are celebrating American history and culture through food. The “Food and The Soul of America” series has kicked off with exciting events featuring renowned chefs and authors.

From January, Adrian Miller, a two-time James Beard Award winner, started things off. Local author Valerie J. Frey also led sessions on preserving family recipes and exploring their history, highlighting the deep connection between our roots and the food we share.

Each event includes delicious samples of the featured food, and you can even meet the authors and get their books signed!

Here’s a sneak peek at some upcoming events:

John T. Edge – Thursday, February 5 at 6:00 PM

John T. Edge, a celebrated host and writer, brings expertise on Southern food history. His work has raised awareness of the rich culinary traditions in the South, celebrating favorites like grits and cornbread.

Classic Country Cooking with Melinda Newton – Tuesday, February 10 at 6:00 PM

Melinda Newton, affectionately known as “The Chicken Lady,” will share her journey in Southern cooking. As the owner of Minnie’s Uptown Restaurant, she knows the joy that comes from a hearty meal.

Minnie’s has been a local staple since 1987, and Melinda is excited to help preserve family recipes through the library’s initiatives.

Very Vera! – Tuesday, February 17 at 6:00 PM

Vera Stewart, known for her successful catering business and her cooking show, will speak about modern Southern cuisine. She gained national attention after her victory over Bobby Flay in a cooking competition, showcasing her culinary talent.

Historic Georgia Recipes – Thursday, February 26 at 6:00 PM

Valerie J. Frey returns to discuss recipes from Georgia and the South prior to World War II. Attendees will sample dishes inspired by historical cookbooks, including a signature temperance punch from 1909.

This speaker series runs through March 4, and all events are free! By joining, you’ll not only learn but enjoy tasty bites that may inspire you to try cooking them at home.
