In March, Google rolled out the Wear OS 5.1 update for the Pixel Watch 3. This update introduced a new feature called Channel Sounding. This feature could make it easier to find other devices using Bluetooth. However, it’s not yet in use because it requires multiple devices to work effectively. According to Android Authority, the Pixel Watch 3 is among the first Android devices to add this capability.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) revealed the latest version, Bluetooth 6.0, in September 2024. One of its major advancements is Channel Sounding. Unlike traditional Bluetooth trackers that rely on signal strength—which can be unreliable due to obstacles—this method measures how long it takes to send signals at different frequencies. That can lead to "centimeter-level accuracy," as per Bluetooth SIG.
Current devices like the Apple AirTag use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for accurate location tracking. UWB allows apps like Apple’s Find My to provide precise distance measurements and directional guidance. However, UWB requires special hardware, which can raise costs. In contrast, Channel Sounding uses standard Bluetooth hardware, which is much more common and accessible in today’s devices.
To take advantage of Channel Sounding, devices will need to support Bluetooth 6.0. Since the Pixel Watch 3 has been out for nearly 10 months, many existing gadgets are likely compatible. The next step is for companies to roll out software updates to enable these features.
As the tech landscape continues to evolve, the move toward more accurate tracking methods is significant. Recent studies show that 70% of users prefer devices that offer precise location tracking features. This trend highlights the growing demand for better connectivity solutions in everyday devices.
Understanding how these advancements impact our daily lives is essential. For instance, as more devices adopt features like Channel Sounding, we might see improved navigation and safety in activities ranging from finding misplaced items to enhancing smart home automation.
Overall, the evolution of Bluetooth technology promises exciting changes, making our devices smarter and more connected.
