New Jersey Takes Action to Support Residents Hit Hard by SNAP Benefit Suspension
TRENTON – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared a State of Emergency starting on November 1, 2025. This follows the Trump Administration’s decision to suspend federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Executive Order No. 402 aims to ensure that vulnerable residents continue to have access to food during this challenging time.
Over 800,000 people in New Jersey depend on SNAP for their basic nutrition. Alarmingly, nearly half of these individuals are children. One in three has a disability, and one in five is over 60 years old. Without SNAP benefits, many of these residents might go hungry, facing serious health risks as a result.
Governor Murphy emphasized the critical need for support, stating, “The suspension of benefits threatens the health and safety of our residents. We will do everything to ensure families have access to food.” His administration plans to mobilize resources to strengthen food access networks and protect those most in need.
As federal funds will not be available, SNAP recipients can still use any remaining balances from previous months. Families can visit their accounts here to check their balances.
All children in families receiving SNAP benefits are automatically eligible for free school meals. They don’t need to fill out additional applications; they just need to head to the school cafeteria. For those not enrolled yet, contacting their school district is advised.

Historically, SNAP benefits have played a vital role in supporting low-income families, especially during economic downturns. According to a recent study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, every $1 spent on SNAP raises the economy by $1.70, highlighting its importance not just for individual families but for the economy as a whole.
