Discover HAL’s Exciting New Venture: Producing the Innovative Russian SJ-100 Civil Aircraft!

New Delhi: India and Russia have strengthened their partnership by agreeing to produce a twin-engine passenger aircraft aimed at short-haul flights. This collaboration involves Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia’s Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC), with the pact signed in Moscow.

This project will be a milestone for India’s aviation industry, marking the first time a passenger aircraft is made in the country. Currently, over 200 SJ-100 aircraft are in operation across more than 16 airlines.

HAL believes the SJ-100 will significantly improve short-haul connectivity in India, especially under the UDAN scheme, which promotes regional air travel. HAL will manufacture these aircraft for local customers, a move they describe as a new chapter in India’s aviation history.

The collaboration not only props up the concept of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ or self-reliant India, but also aims to create jobs in the aviation sector. According to estimates, over the next decade, India’s aviation industry will need more than 200 jets like the SJ-100 to boost regional travel and an additional 350 aircraft to cater to international tourist spots in the Indian Ocean.

Historically, HAL hasn’t manufactured a complete passenger aircraft since the AVRO HS-748, produced from 1961 to 1988. This new project marks a significant resurgence in India’s capabilities in aircraft manufacturing. Aviation expert Dr. Kiran Jadhav notes that “this partnership is not just about building planes; it’s about building a sustainable aviation ecosystem.”

Generally, aviation trends indicate a growing demand for regional connectivity, especially as India’s middle class expands. With initiatives like the UDAN scheme and collaborations like this, the future of Indian aviation looks promising.
