Dr. Sushil Sharma, the head of the Cardiology Department at GMCH Jammu, recently held a cardiac awareness camp at Shiv Mandir in Panchayat Mishriwala. The initiative aimed to educate locals about the dangers of cardiovascular diseases and the critical role physical activity plays in heart health.

During the camp, Dr. Sharma and his team conducted health screenings for individuals at high risk of heart issues. They focused on promoting healthier lifestyle choices to help prevent heart disease.

Dr. Sharma pointed out that heart disease is the leading cause of death globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies physical inactivity as a top risk factor for heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Despite medical advancements, lifestyle choices significantly affect heart health.

“Today, technology changes how we work and live,” Dr. Sharma explained. While it offers convenience, it has also promoted a sedentary lifestyle.” Many people sit for extended periods for work or entertainment. This lack of movement can lead to serious health problems, especially heart conditions.

He highlighted several ways inactivity can impact heart health:

1. Increased risk of obesity
2. Elevated blood pressure (hypertension)
3. High cholesterol and arterial blockages
4. Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
5. Poor blood circulation and risk of blood clots
6. Weakening of heart muscles and decreased endurance

Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just harm physical health; it can also damage mental well-being, which in turn affects heart health.

Recent statistics reveal that nearly 60% of adults do not meet recommended physical activity levels. This trend is concerning, especially as more people work from home or engage in passive entertainment.

Dr. Sharma urges everyone to incorporate physical activities into their daily routines. Simple changes, like taking short breaks to walk or seated exercises, can significantly improve heart health.

At the camp, Dr. Sharma was joined by other dedicated healthcare professionals, including Dr. Yashwant Sharma, Dr. Venkatesh Yellupu, and Dr. Aditya Sharma, along with a team of paramedics and volunteers who helped facilitate the event.
