Apple’s Senior VP, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, humorously noted that fears of the App Store’s demise in the AI era may have been exaggerated. In light of this data, many are rethinking the narrative around AI and its impact on apps.
Speculation exists that AI will reshape how we create apps. Experts suggest that tools like Claude Code and Replit empower anyone, regardless of their technical skills, to build their own applications. The data from Appfigures reveals trends in app categories. While mobile games still dominate new releases, productivity apps have made it to the top five for the first time. Utilities rose to second place, while lifestyle apps improved from fifth to third. Health and fitness apps completed the top five.
This shift may reflect changing user needs. As people seek ways to enhance productivity and wellness, these app categories are gaining popularity. In the past, mobile games were the undisputed kings of the app market, but times are changing.
With AI making app development easier, we might be hitting a tipping point where more people are creating apps than ever before. Apple faces challenges too; the influx of apps has led to some missteps. Recently, they had to pull down a rewards app, Freecash, after it violated App Store rules, and there was a fraudulent cryptocurrency app that scammed users out of $9.5 million.
Despite these hiccups, Apple has a strong record of screening out dangerous apps. Their latest report indicated they blocked or rejected over 17,000 apps for various violations in 2024. Yet, experts like John Gruber point out that the App Store needs more oversight to catch fraudulent apps before they gain popularity.
