ChatGPT offers some useful insights on climate change, but it often misses important details. While it covers the general concepts well, it glosses over the significant indirect environmental impacts.

It frequently points to what big tech companies are doing to tackle these issues, but the information is often vague. After almost every inquiry, ChatGPT tends to reassure users that these negative effects can be managed well. This can give a false impression that, with proper control, the serious consequences of climate change can be avoided.

Transitioning to renewable energy is vital, yet the energy demands of data centers are rising quickly. This demand is outpacing our current clean energy capacity. A study from MIT indicates that these centers could soon require a massive amount of electricity, contributing significantly to energy consumption over the next decade.

In the U.S., this increased demand has led to delays in shutting down fossil fuel power plants. Some proposals are even suggesting to bring back retired fossil fuel and nuclear plants due to this growing need.

Dona Mathew, speaking to The Quint, said she wasn’t surprised by the shortcomings of ChatGPT. She remarks that the training data for AI reflects a mix of recent online discussions and general knowledge, but questions its accuracy.

A study from December 2024 highlighted bias in chatbot responses concerning environmental issues. Titled ‘Does AI bias perceptions of environmental challenges?’, the research found that chatbots typically suggest small, traditional solutions rather than proposing bold changes in our economic, social, and political frameworks. The authors noted that this bias is particularly concerning as time runs short to address many environmental issues effectively.

Mathew pointed out that there is a clear bias against significant environmental actions in chatbot responses. She believes we need more transparency in how these systems operate, particularly as generative AI becomes a primary tool for accessing information by people, websites, and browsers.
