New Delhi: Bharat Forge Limited has made a significant move by signing a long-term contract with Brazil’s Embraer, the third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer worldwide. This agreement marks a historic achievement as Bharat Forge becomes the first Indian company to supply high-quality forged components for landing gear systems in Embraer’s commercial and defense aircraft.
The contract covers various aircraft types, including commercial jets and military models like the C-390 Millennium. These forged components are essential for aircraft, as they need to meet strict metallurgical standards. Any failure in landing gear could lead to severe consequences.
Vice chairman Amit B Kalyani called this deal a landmark moment for Bharat Forge. He emphasized its significance in enhancing their capabilities in the aerospace sector. With this contract, they aim to boost the production of crucial components, complementing their existing strengths in aero-engine parts.
Embraer echoed this sentiment, stating that the partnership underlines their commitment to fostering the aerospace ecosystem in India and creating valuable, long-term relationships within the supply chain.
Expanding Presence in India
This contract comes as part of Embraer’s broader strategy in India. The company, during its presentation at Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad, noted that the Indian aviation market is expected to require at least 500 new aircraft in the 80-to-146-seat category over the next two decades.
On the defense front, Embraer is actively collaborating with the Mahindra Group to produce the C-390 Millennium in India. This partnership supports the Indian Air Force’s medium transport aircraft needs. Furthermore, plans were announced for establishing maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities for the C-390, which aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative.
In addition, Embraer has joined forces with Adani Defence & Aerospace to create an integrated regional transport aircraft ecosystem in India. Another partnership with Hindalco Industries will explore the production of aerospace-grade aluminum, highlighting Embraer’s commitment to deepening its industrial footprint in the country.
Recent trends indicate a growing reliance on Indian manufacturing in the aerospace sector, driven by governmental policies and the increasing demand for regional aircraft. According to a recent report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indian airlines are projected to take delivery of over 1,600 new planes by 2040, further solidifying the significance of partnerships like the one between Bharat Forge and Embraer.
As the aerospace industry evolves, collaborations such as these will play a crucial role in propelling India’s position on the global stage.
