Nastja Claessens is making waves in basketball. In 2023, she became only the second player in Belgian women’s basketball to be named both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. At just 21, she embodies talent and promise.
It’s a remarkable journey for Claessens. She started playing competitively at 15 with Ion Basket Waregem, moved to Castors Braine, and was drafted 30th overall by the Washington Mystics in 2024. Yet, she opted to develop her skills overseas. Recently, she played a significant role in helping Belgium win the 2025 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket. On top of that, she represented her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Claessens recently joined Kansas State University (K-State), becoming the first Belgium-born player in the program’s history. In a triumph against BYU, she scored a season-high 25 points, showcasing her ability to dominate the game. She shot 64% from the field and contributed with four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. It was a stark contrast to her previous game against Arizona, where she scored only two points.
Reflecting on her performance, Claessens said, “I tend to overthink. When I don’t think too much, I perform better.” This mindset shift has become vital for her game. Claessens is focused on helping K-State, a younger team compared to last year, find success in the Big 12 Conference. Currently, she averages 11.4 points per game at an impressive 52.9% shooting percentage.
Claessens appreciates the support from K-State’s community. She feels a strong connection with her coach, Jeff Mittie, who acknowledged the unique situation of finding talent in the transfer portal. “At that time, there weren’t many players available. Nastja was someone we really wanted to pursue,” Mittie noted.
Historically, the journey of international players in American college basketball has been growing. With the NCAA expanding globally, many have come to the U.S. to pursue their dreams. Women like Claessens are paving the way for future stars.
