However, the reality is quite different from the social media hype. The actual prototype, known as the MechanicalTree, was developed by Carbon Collect, a private company, with Lackner. The first model was installed at Arizona State University (ASU) in 2022. Unlike the viral images that resembled a giant tuning fork, the MechanicalTree is a tall, metallic cylinder designed to gather carbon efficiently.

What Makes the MechanicalTree Special?

The MechanicalTree stands at 9 feet tall, designed to expand up to 33 feet. It has multiple discs that capture carbon, claiming to be 1,000 times as effective as a regular tree of similar size in carbon capture. Carbon Collect plans a second-generation MechanicalTree, hoping to start commercial deployment in 2025. Pól Ó Móráin, CEO of Carbon Collect, mentioned that the original prototype would be replaced by this new model shortly.

Where Did the Confusion Come From?

Lackner began developing the concept of artificial trees in the 1990s while at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He joined Columbia University in 2001, where early designs resembled what many now think of as the “artificial tree.” Although photos from 2004 featured a tuning fork-like design, the prototype built was quite different.

Social media posts may have confused people because they used old images that didn’t represent the current technology. They likely drew upon Lackner’s earlier sketches, perhaps even emerging from AI-generated recreations of those designs.
