Dr. Shalette Ashman is stepping into the world of fashion modeling at 50. She’s a motivational speaker, author, and the mind behind e-Learning Jamaica, now adding freelance modeling to her list of achievements.
Shalette always dreamed of being a model. One day she decided to take the leap. “I just got up and thought, why not?” she shared. Now, she collaborates with six designers, proudly wearing their creations. “Every time I step out, people compliment my look. It made me realize it’s time to embrace this!”
She recently debuted her modeling career by walking for designer Heather Laine at a major event in Jamaica. The modeling industry can be tough, especially for someone over 50. Yet, Shalette is determined. “Getting my first client was emotional. It was a dream coming true,” she recalled, talking about her first paid gig with designer Cholla’s Covered by Grace, who has been dressing her since 2017.
While managing LearningHub Group, her e-learning company, Shalette is navigating this new adventure. She believes her education has greatly shaped her modeling career. With a PhD in computing in education and multiple master’s degrees, she brings strategic thinking and creativity to the table, vital in the fashion world.
Even if she hasn’t landed a typical commercial modeling role yet, she finds joy in the creative process. “I don’t just model; I create. Give me the clothes, and I’ll bring the vision to life.” Her approach is fresh and unconventional. “I’m not bound by rules. I love expressing myself freely through fashion.”
“I’m over 50 and thriving in an industry that often celebrates youth. My belief in myself and passion for what I do keep me going. I model for the joy of it, challenging stereotypes about beauty and age,” she explained.
Her journey is about more than just modeling. It shows how education and motivation can open doors. “Combining knowledge with passion allows you to carve your own path,” she said.
Shalette is already making waves, working with several designers like Simone Michelle and Iela Sandals and Accessories. She hopes to expand her portfolio into fragrances soon.
From her childhood selling snacks on the streets of Grants Pen to earning advanced degrees, her story is one of resilience. “I always wanted to be an educator. I faced many challenges but never gave up on my dreams,” she reflected, recalling her academic journey.
With the same spirit guiding her now, Shalette continues to push forward. “Success is not about being in the spotlight; it’s about knowing your path and moving towards it.”
Looking ahead, she aims to dismantle stereotypes about older individuals in modeling. “I’m having fun with this journey. Sure, the industry often favors youth, but here I am, thriving and loving every minute!”
